Low Cost Motion Capture with the Kinect


Since 2009, the gaming experience has experienced a great revolution with the creation of the Microsoft Kinect Sensor. Before that, all gamers were only dreaming about playing video games without using a controller. The idea of using their body to control the games was only on movies. So, on November, 2010 the Kinect Sensor was launched in USA for Xbox 360. Imagine becoming a Jedi on the Star Wars game, being a F1 pilot or playing any sport like Tennis, Baseball or Bowling in your own TV room. That’s what Kinect owners were provided, a totally different and innovative experience.

Microsoft Kinect Sensor is an amazing package of software and hardware. Its hardware has suffered very few modifications since its launch, receiving many software updates during the last years. The hardware is composed of a sensor bar that deals with 3D depth sensors, an RGB camera, a mutli-array microphone used to do low cost motion capture the environment sounds and a motor pivot used when it’s self calibrating. With all these features, Kinect can be used not only to play games, but to control all the Xbox, like voice recognizing commands, taking a picture to log in to your Microsoft account, and many other features that are always being developed.

Since this revolutionary new product launch by Microsoft, many people are studying this sensor for applying the ideas on various fields. We can see its usage on simple to complex applications. People are using it for medical applications as 3D Scans, surgery information, augmented anatomical overlays, where people can see their bone structures by just standing over a screen and so many. People are also using this sensor for things like trying clothes by just looking on the screen, also things like changing a wall to a touch-screen environment, translations, and so many applications.


Companies are also starting to use Kinect to develop 3D animations, by just using a computer connected to a Kinect Sensor. You can use it on Windows or MAC OS, with many options of softwares available in the market. Following this idea, Fastmocap has developed a system for 3D motion capture using Microsoft Kinect Sensor. Basic Rules of Silkroad Salvation

I also made some changes to the basic rules, which I feel will improve the overall playing experience. Firstly, there is no botting – only real players. Players who abuse this will be banned instantly. There is no debate about this fact, as botting gives players an unfair advantage by being able to earn without actually playing. There is also no taxing. This means that you cannot use a high level player to power up another player that is not contributing. Basically, the lower levels must contribute by either attacking or healing, but buffing is not considered contributing. Finally, there is no farming of battle arena coins.

Further Changes to Silkroad

silkroad1The changes do not stop there, as I have made every effort to improve Silkroad. My goal is to make Silkroad Salvation enjoyable for both casual gamers and hardcore Silkroad players. This means that the majority of the gameplay has been tailored for player versus player gaming. The result is a game that offers repeatably entertaining content without requiring the need to raise the cap past 70. The overall changes should reduce the monotony for newer players while still providing fun gameplay for those that are familiar with the game. Silkroad Salvation remains competitive while still letting newbies take their time getting used to the gameplay. Another change in this version comes in the form of skills. The majority of the skills have been edited for smoother gameplay. Some minor changes include the removal of magic pop, damage scrolls, premium ticket, and devil spirit.

Changes to World Maps

cont_03_01There are only two world maps that are active in Silkroad Salvation – Jangan and Dw. Since this version of Silkroad is designed to be more geared towards jobbing and guilds, we wanted to a more condensed world. I examined the trade routes and removed the ones that were least active and useful.
